LANHAM, Md. – President Barack Obama said America needs a raise in a speech at a Costco Wholesale just outside Washington.

Taking his State of the Union address on the road Wednesday, Obama called for a raise in the federal minimum wage to lift the country’s lowest-paid full time workers above the poverty line.

Let me start with this disclaimer: I am Dominican and am an immigrant in the U.S.

Tuesday, I attended a discussion at the Center for Strategic International Studies on the relationship between the Dominican Republic and Haiti; recent developments in Dominican law pushed the topic of immigration to center stage.

Much like the United States, the Dominican Republic has long grappled with illegal immigration across its only land border, which the country shares with Haiti. It’s one small island – 29,530 square miles to be exact – divided unevenly between the two nations. Continue reading
